Which countries stock exchanges are included in this tool?

The Global Stock Returns Calculator includes exchange data from more than 60 countries including the US, UK, Switzerland, China, India, and many others. Notable exceptions are Japan and Saudi Arabia, which will hopefully be included soon.

What currency are returns measured in?

Returns are always measured in the same denomination as the underlying assets. For example, US stocks are measured in USD, UK stocks in GBP, etc.

Where do you get your data?

The data here (share prices, dividends, stock splits, etc.) all comes directly from exchanges around the world such as NYSE, NASDAQ, LSE etc.

Can I compare stocks from different countries in the same backtest?

You can compare stocks from different countries, but only as long as they are measured in the same currency. For example, you can run a backtest with BNP Paribas (France) and Banco Santander (Spain) and it will work fine as they are both denominated in Euros. However, if you add Maersk (Denmark) it will not work, as Danish stocks are traded in Danish Krone, not Euros.

Are dividend reinvestments included in the returns?

Yes, the default setting assumes dividends are reinvested.

Does this tool account for stock splits?

Yes, stock splits are included across all exchanges for the entire available history.

How far back can I run a backtest?

Many exchanges provide data going back more than 30 years, so you can freely backtest long periods of time.

What is CAGR and how is it calculated?

CAGR stands for compound annual growth rate, and it is calculated with the following equation: CAGR = [(Ending Value / Beginning Value)^(1 / Number of Years)] – 1.

What is the drawdown?

The drawdown tool shows how much a stock has fallen from its previous peak. Max drawdown shows the maximum 'dip' you would have had to endure through the period in which you held the asset.

What is the Risk/Return ratio shown in the results?

The risk/return ratio on this site is also known as MAR, or managed accounts ratio. It is a common metric used by asset managers to gauge risk-adjusted returns of a stock or portfolio. It is calculated by dividing the CAGR by the maximum drawdown.

About the Global Stock Returns Calculator

The Global Stock Returns Calculator allows you to compare the real returns (including dividend reinvestment where applicable) for more than 100,000 companies, ETF's, and indices worldwide. It is also possible to compare these with other asset classes such as forex, bonds and cryptocurrencies.

In order to see the real returns of any asset of your liking, begin by typing it into the autocomplete field above and select from the available options. There are no limits on the number of companies you can compare, but the assets must be denominated in the same currency.

After entering the assets you would like to see and clicking "start backtest" you will be shown various graphs and metrics showing the investment performance. The graphs are interactive so feel free to play around with them, and please note that for high-return assets such as Bitcoin or NVIDIA, you can click "log scale" to see results on a logarithmic basis.
